    The Anhawo Motels. The Amnano. Annawo Motels. The Annand Motels, that is, the Anhand. I mean Ahwawo.

    No variations of these words exist in any of the usual places. And the word motel doesn’t even show up in the directories until 1942. So, for lack of a better expression, this is just damn weird.

    What’s remarkable about the image above is how fleeting this vista was (some number of years though it may have been, ca. 1964-67, 62-8 at the improbable outside, it’s still blink of an eye in the Grand Scheme). The Casa and Ems were never visible from Hill because of the Elks Lodge and other buildings along Olive.

    Which makes the image below all the more amazing (ok, some people have a low threshold for amazing), as it was shot after the demolition of the Casa/Ems but before the ’69 removal of Angels Flight. And the Union Bank peeking up is just too cool.
